How to find it

Look south on winter evenings for the three bright, evenly spaced stars of Orion's Belt. Betelgeuse (red) marks his shoulder; Rigel (blue) marks his foot.

The story

A giant huntsman placed in the sky by Zeus. Pursued the Pleiades sisters and was ultimately killed by a scorpion — hence Orion and Scorpius sit on opposite sides of the sky, never visible together.

02 · Reference

A constellation isn't a group of stars.

Since 1930, the International Astronomical Union has defined constellations as regions of the sky, not just star patterns. Every point on the celestial sphere belongs to exactly one of the 88 constellations — the "shape" is just the historically famous asterism inside that region.

Asterism

An informal star pattern. The Big Dipper is an asterism inside the constellation Ursa Major, not a constellation itself.

Asterisms can be formed from stars within a single constellation, or they can span across multiple constellations. The Summer Triangle, for example, is a massive asterism made of the brightest stars in Lyra, Cygnus, and Aquila. Because they are informal, asterisms are not officially recognized by the International Astronomical Union (IAU), but they remain incredibly useful tools for amateur astronomers to navigate the night sky.
Zodiac

The 12 constellations that lie along the ecliptic — the Sun's apparent path through the sky. (Actually 13 if you count Ophiuchus.)

The ecliptic is the geometric plane of Earth's orbit projected onto the celestial sphere. As Earth revolves around the Sun, the Sun appears to move through these specific background constellations. While traditional astrology only recognizes 12 zodiac signs, the IAU's official boundaries adopted in 1930 mean the Sun also spends roughly 18 days passing through the constellation of Ophiuchus, the Serpent Bearer, making it the 13th astronomical zodiac constellation.
Circumpolar

Constellations that never set from a given latitude. From mid-northern latitudes, Ursa Major and Cassiopeia rotate around Polaris all night, every night.

Whether a constellation is circumpolar depends entirely on the observer's latitude on Earth. At the North Pole, all visible constellations are circumpolar because the celestial equator perfectly aligns with the horizon. For observers at the equator, no constellations are circumpolar; every star rises and sets. For most of the Northern Hemisphere, the iconic W-shape of Cassiopeia and the bowl of the Big Dipper (Ursa Major) act as reliable, never-setting celestial clocks.
